History and culture abound in France. From the historic buildings in Paris to the Mediterranean beaches around Marseilles and Nice, there is something for everyone in France. Here are some great locales to visit.
When most people think about France, Paris likely comes to mind. Museums and landmarks are abound in the French capital. The area around the Île-de-France is full of amazing sights. While Notre Dame Cathedral might be inaccessible because of fire damage, St. Chapelle is another impressive Gothic cathedral on the same island. Also, the same neighborhood is home to streets with shops and restaurants that cater to tourists, and the Louvre is just a short walk across a bridge on the River Seine. Of course, no trip to Paris is complete without a visit to the Eiffel Tower or Versailles to see the famous gardens and the Hall of Mirrors.
History lovers who visit France should visit the beaches of Normandy. This solemn region of France saw the successful Allied invasion that turned the tide of World War II in Europe. There are many memorials, museums and military cemeteries that commemorate the events of 1944 in Normandy.
The Mediterranean Coast
Some of the best beaches in the entire Mediterranean region lie in France. The towns of Marseilles and Nice have some of the best beach locations in the area. They are popular with tourists and have an upscale feel. Nice is only a short jaunt from one of the smallest sovereign territories on earth, Monaco. This small city-state is one of the most expensive pieces of real estate on the planet.
The French Alps
Much of France lies along its lengthy coastline. The country is also home to some impressive mountain vistas. Some of these lie in the Pyrenees, the mountains that make up the border between France and Spain. The most impressive mountains, especially for those who like to ski, are located in the French Alps. While more people might think of Italy or Switzerland when they think of the Alps, the mountains in France were impressive enough to host three Winter Olympics. It’s possible to visit the Olympic sites in Chamonix, Grenoble and Albertville and ski the slopes that adorn the region while also taking in its natural beauty.
